The Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s 15th team, is scheduled to make its debut in 2026, and tennis legend Serena Williams has formally joined the ownership group.

After the 2025 season, the team, which is supported by Kilmer Sports Ventures and is led by Larry Tanenbaum, will have an expansion draft. The leadership of the company has been further cemented with the appointment of Teresa Resch as team president.

Williams emphasized the value of funding women’s sports while expressing her pleasure about the chance. “I’ve always said that women’s sports are an amazing investment opportunity, and this moment is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes, not just basketball,” she said. “I’m thrilled to be working with Larry Tanenbaum and the entire Canadian community to build this new WNBA franchise and legacy.”

In agreement, Tanenbaum praised Williams’ impact on and off the court. “Serena Williams is a global change agent, an icon, and a role model. Through perseverance, hard effort, and determination in the face of innumerable obstacles, she has earned every bit of her extraordinary achievement. We are so delighted to have Serena in our court since she is the epitome of what the Tempo stands for.

Williams, who also has shares in the Los Angeles Golf Club, Miami Dolphins, and Angel City FC, will actively participate in creating the team’s uniforms and forming important merchandising alliances. She has established a number of enterprises, such as WYN Beauty, S by Serena, and a profitable venture capital fund, in addition to her athletic endeavors.

Williams is still regarded as a cultural icon even as she builds on her success in business and athletics. She most recently solidified her reputation as a global ambassador for excellence with a spectacular performance at Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show.
