In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Kirk Hammett provided an update on the follow-up to 2023’s 72 Seasons, and Metallica is preparing for the 2025 leg of their M72 tour.

Regarding the quantity of riffs he has composed for the upcoming album, the guitarist stated, “I have 767 new ones.” Going through this stuff is also such a nightmare. And I’m in charge of everything, yet I’m unable to accomplish it. We’re still wrapping up the 72 Seasons tour, so I don’t think we’ll start working on the next record for at least another year.

He continued, “I think we’re going to take a little bit of a break, not too much of one, and then we’re going to get right back into it once we fully finish this and go to all the outlying places like Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.” Sadly for fans, Hammett believes it will be “at least another year” before they begin production on their next album.

Hammett also talked about the new material’s possible tone. “Who knows? “We might just decide to go back to the Nineties once more,” he remarked. “It’s a good concept! That is something we haven’t yet said to one another. It’s also intriguing because there was a lot of criticism when Load’and-Reload was released. However, I still encounter fans now who adore that time period.

People go crazy when we play “Fuel.” People are familiar with every phrase when we play “Until It Sleeps.” I listened to every Zeppelin album when I was a teenager, with the exception of Zeppelin III, which was more acoustic, because I like the high-energy, violent stuff,” he continued. “But as time went on, I truly embraced Zeppelin III and its amazing qualities.”

Below is a schedule of Metallica’s upcoming North American shows.
