Bobby Brown is not a fan of Britney Spears’ rendition of his popular song, My Prerogative.
The R&B singer put the single on his 1988 album Don’t Be Cruel, and it has since been covered or sampled by numerous artists.
However, during an interview with Club Shay Shay on Wednesday, Brown told host Shannon Sharpe that he didn’t enjoy Spears’ performance, which appeared on her 2004 compilation, Greatest Hits: My Prerogative.

“I don’t think they really did justice to any of the samples that they have done to my songs,” and he dismissed them. “Britney Spears violated (My) Prerogative. Teddy Riley created it, but it was such a travesty that I couldn’t bear it. I cleared it because it was Britney Spears and I thought she’d do a terrific job. Teddy Riley is doing that too, so you know, but I thought it was horrible.”

Despite Brown referencing Riley, the Swedish production team Bloodshy & Avant supervised Spears’ rendition. Riley produced the original and is listed as a songwriter on both Brown and Spears’ versions of the song.

During the conversation, Brown also mentioned that he always wants to hear a cover of one of his songs before allowing it to be recorded.

“Yes, I have to hear it,” the 56-year-old added. “You don’t know what these kids are going to say these days. These kids will say things that you do not want your music connected with.”
Representatives for Spears have yet to reply to Brown’s comments.
