Finally, in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders was selected by the Cleveland Browns.

In reaction to the disclosure of Shedeur Sanders’ phone number for the NFL Draft, the NFL penalized defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich $100,000 and the Atlanta Falcons $250,000. Jax, Ulbrich’s son, prank called the former Colorado quarterback using the number, tricking him into believing he was Mickey Loomis, general manager of the New Orleans Saints.

Earlier this week, the Falcons released a statement on the incident. The team stated, as reported by The New York Times, that “Jax Ulbrich, the 21-year-old son of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, accidentally discovered the draft contact phone number for Shedeur Sanders off an open iPad while visiting his parent’s home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.”

The group went on: “Jeff Ulbrich was only informed of the above after the fact and was not aware of the data exposure or any aspects of the prank.” In addition to facilitating an apology from Jax to the Sanders family personally, the Atlanta Falcons sincerely apologize to Shedeur Sanders and his family, to whom we have been in communication to express our disapproval of this behavior.

Following a social media video that showed him sitting next to the guy who called Sanders, Jax also posted an apology on his Instagram page. “I made a huge error on Friday night. What I did was utterly unacceptable, humiliating, and horrible, Shedeur. I really apologize for interrupting your moment; it was egotistical and immature,” he added. “I never thought that I would make a horrible error and ruin one of the most memorable moments of your life while I was getting ready to celebrate it.”

The NFL is still looking into the matter because it has been reported that a number of other prospects, who don’t seem to be connected to Jax Ulbrich, have had to deal with hoax calls.

Shedeur Sanders was ultimately selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round. Sanders, who many observers predicted would be among the first quarterbacks off the board heading into the selection, had an unexpected outcome.
