With the release of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS 15.3, Apple’s most recent AI-powered feature, Apple Intelligence, is now enabled by default on compatible devices.
While this suite of AI capabilities includes features such as message summaries, image production, and enhanced Siri interactions, it also has a large storage demand. Apple’s own literature states that Apple Intelligence uses up to 7GB of storage on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.
You can also disable particular functions instead of turning it off entirely.

Users with low storage space or who do not find the AI functions useful can completely disable Apple Intelligence. Once switched off, the device’s local AI models are erased, freeing up space. This is very useful for iPhone users with limited storage, particularly those who do not actively employ AI-generated material or advancements.

To disable Apple Intelligence, go to Settings on an iPhone or iPad, or System Settings on a Mac, and then select the “Apple Intelligence & Siri” option. Toggling off Apple Intelligence will ask a confirmation, and the system will then delete AI-related resources. Some AI capabilities, including Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Image Playground, will no longer be available. However, some features, such as the Photos app’s Clean Up option, may remain available.

Apple Intelligence is currently unavailable in mainland China, and Apple has not set a timetable for its rollout there. Furthermore, only devices with Apple’s most recent hardware, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 series, and M-series iPads and Macs, enable Apple Intelligence. Users who have updated to iOS 18.2 must additionally opt in to use the AI features.

For individuals who are unsure about totally turning off Apple Intelligence, Apple offers the option to disable particular functionalities through app settings. Features such as message summaries in alerts and writing aid tools can be turned off without completely deactivating the AI suite. By customizing these options, users can customize their experience while maintaining control over their device’s storage and functioning.
